Beatrice
(Hollandsworth) Lyles was born January 14, 1924 in Sperry,
Oklahoma. Bea graduated from Sperry High School in 1941. She
is a member of the First Baptist Church and has lived the
majority of her years in Sperry.
She comes
by her sense of community and willingness to help through
her family. Her father was very active in the community. He
served on the school board for Sperry Public Schools and was
the mayor of Sperry for many years. Bea served as a homeroom
mother for 23 years and was a Sperry Booster Club member.
Bea retired
from the United States Postal Service in 1989 after
twenty-nine years of service. She worked in the Sperry and
Tulsa Post Offices where she held various positions.
After her
retirement she worked as a volunteer at Sperry Schools,
helping first grade students learn to read, understand math,
spelling and being a proxy grandmother to many. She has
continued to offer her services to the community in a
variety of ways including membership in the Sperry
Merchants, where she serves as secretary/treasurer, Kiwanis
(Charter member and past president), and member of the
Ma-Hai-Ya Club (past president).
Bea enjoys
traveling and attending sporting events and can be seen at
many school functions. She enjoys watching basketball and
attending as many games as she can. Bea states that
"being active keeps her young."
